Welcome To A New Year!

August 25th, 2009

Hello,

Another wonderful year is ahead of us. I am looking forward to working with Kindergarten and first grade students, who are in need of Special Education services. We are in our second year using the Harcourt Reading Program. It is a challenging program. Your help with your child’s homework will be very important. The children will need the extra practice at home to be successful.

We will continue to use the Investigations Math program. Be on the lookout for homework in the weeks to follow.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding school, please call me at 323-2935, ext. 1019. If you leave a message I will return your call as soon as possible. You may also e-mail me at vhollon@colonial.k12.de.us. My planning period is between 2:20-3:05 if you need to meet with me in person. Please call for an appointment.

Together, we will make a difference for your child.  I am happy to have the opportunity to teach each student during this 2008-2009 school year. Good luck to all of us.

Spring Has Sprung!

April 28th, 2008

Spring has finally arrived and we are in the final weeks of school. The year has gone by incredibly fast and your children have grown so much during these months.

We will continue to work on reading skills and comprehension of text through May. Please check folders for homework as the extra practice provides much needed reinforcement of skills. In math we are working on  number combinations, graphs, story problems, and  patterns. There are some tricky concepts here, so completing homework is important.

As always, if you have any questions regarding your child please call me here at Pleasantville. The number is 323-2935, ext. 1134.  Thanks for all your support this year. Count down to the end in on!

Hello once again. It’s hard to believe that October is almost over. Time flies when your having fun. I hope to be seeing some of you tonight at Pleasantville’s Math Night. Its a great time to gain an  understanding of the math curriculum your child is expected to master. It should be a fun learning activity for both of you so hope I see you there.

Also coming up are Parent Conferences. The dates are November 6,7, 8 and 9. The conference information will be coming home shortly so please check your child’s folder and send back your requests form. I hope to meet with everyone at this time and look forward to discussing current assessments and observations.

Thanks for all your support with homework. Everyone is doing a great job at completing assignments. Keep up the great work. The repeated practice of skills taught in class really help the student to learn and commit the skills to their long term memory.

Look forward to meeting everyone.

What’s New in Room 19

September 5th, 2007

Hello everyone! School has gotten off to a fine start. I am looking forward to teaching your child.  This is my 24th year as an instructor in Colonial School District and every year brings changes and challenges. I will be working with first and second grade Special Education students in the areas of reading, writing and math.

First graders will be working on letter and sound recognition, blending sounds to decode words, rhyming activities, building a sight vocabulary, listening and responding to stories read aloud and learning to write words and sentences that have sound/symbol relationships so that their pieces may be read by others. We will also be working on handwriting skills, coloring and cutting. In math, the students will review counting, writing and recognizing numbers to 100. We will review patterns, calendar and simple addition and subtraction. Story problems will be introduced. These are just a few of the skills that will be cover this year.

Second graders will be learning to use strategies taught in class to decode words, build a sight vocabulary, answer comprehension questions from stories read independently or aloud, and to write to a prompt. They should be able to write complete sentences that use sound/symbol relationships so that the pieces may be read by others. In math, we will continue to work on addition and subtraction story problems, money, calendar, graphs, and fractions, among other skills.

If homework is sent home, it will arrive in their folders. provided by me. Please check to see if your child has homework each night. Read or have your child read to you as often as possible. Ask them questions about what is read or watched on T.V. to check their understanding and develop vocabulary.

If you have any questions, contact Virginia Hollon @ Pleasantville School, 323-2935, ext.1019. I wish all of us a happy and successful year.  Together we can make it happen.
